The Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile Big Wave Invitational

Punta de Lobos is the poster wave of Chile. Located just south of the town of Pichilemu, the point at Punta de Lobos stretches for nearly a mile. Most of the point is sand, but at the top, there is more rock and reef structure, particularly in front of the two huge rock formations known as “los morros”. This is where the really big waves break. The takeoff is a perilous one, right in front of the rocks, with rideable wave faces recorded in the 40-foot plus range. The ideal swell direction is from the southwest, while the best winds come from the southeast.

The climate at Punta de Lobos feels like northern California in the winter. During the contest window, average water temperatures range from 53-57 degrees, while daytime air temperatures average in the mid to upper fifties. Out on the point, there is a high desert feel, with 100-foot cliffs separating the spectators from the surf. This makes for a fantastic natural amphitheater, ideal for a big wave surf competition!
